Spanish II students stand with their art exhibit.

COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (September 28, 2023) Fort Wayne Museum of Art will host artwork from Whitley County Consolidated Schools (WCCS) Columbia City High School students through November 5, honoring Thomas R. Marshall.

The Eagle Tech Academy students from Columbia City High School have committed to creating and exhibiting artwork for Dia de los Muertos or The Day of the Dead to honor Mr. Thomas R. Marshall. The 10 students have planned and crafted an altar to celebrate the life of Marshall and bring attention to Whitley County. They set up their art on September 21, with a field trip to The Fort Wayne Museum of Art.

“Working on the Thomas Marshall altar was an engaging and educational experience in many ways. Not only did it allow me to gain knowledge about an important historical figure from our area, but I was also able to take the knowledge I gained and help share it with the public in a fun, entertaining way. I could also apply and share the knowledge I gained in Spanish class, a unique way to combine various information and educational material,” said Karaline Schuman, CCHS Eagle Tech Academy sophomore student.

Thomas R. Marshall is a former Vice President of the United States who made his home and career in Columbia City. Born in North Manchester, he practiced law in Columbia City until he was elected as Governor of Indiana from 1909 to 1913 and then served two terms as Vice President from 1913 to 1921.

“It was so exciting to get to work on this project once again for the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. The students did an exceptional job working together on this project.  They all worked together, split up the work and came up with an amazing end product.  It looks amazing!  I hope people from our community will visit the Museum and see their work. These students represented our school and community very well, I’m so proud of them,” said Mrs. Nancy Beyhan, Spanish Facilitator.

The students’ art display was selected through an application process and will be on display at the Museum of Art through November 5, 2023.
