COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (September 10, 2024) — Whitley County Consolidated Schools (WCCS) is proud to announce that it has been selected as a $250,000 grant winner for Excellence in Student Pathways from the 2024 Educational Excellence Awards Gala hosted by the Indiana Department of Education.
The Educational Excellence Awards Gala, which took place on September 6, 2024, recognized outstanding individuals, schools, and districts across Indiana that are supporting student excellence and growth. WCCS was one of the recipients of the up to $5 million in awards distributed during the event.
“We are honored and thrilled to be recognized by the Indiana Department of Education for our commitment to excellence in student pathways,” said Dr. Laura McDermott, WCCS Superintendent. “The grant will allow us to further enhance our educational pathways at Columbia City High School, ensuring our students have the resources and support they need to succeed in their academic and career pursuits.”
The $250,000 award recognizes WCCS’ priority to access opportunities for work-based learning experiences, and development of innovative community partnerships. WCCS will use the grant to expand student support services, further develop career-focused programs, and strengthen partnerships with local businesses and community organizations. These initiatives are designed to help students seamlessly transition from education to employment, ultimately improving student outcomes and strengthening the local workforce.
“We want to make sure our students are ready for their next steps after high school no matter if they choose post-secondary enrollment, employment, or enlistment. These grants help continue the work to make sure our students have opportunities to pursue their interests while learning through rigorous curriculum. We are grateful and extend appreciation to our local community who makes our work-based learning program as robust as it is, and support career exploration K-12” said Lori Heuer, WCCS Talent Development Director.
WCCS has consistently demonstrated its dedication to providing high-quality education and fostering student success. The Indiana Department of Education is proud to support our efforts through this prestigious award.
The award was funded through the state’s federal American Rescue Plan - Elementary and Secondary Schools Emergency Relief Fund (ARP -ESSER). Funds will support WCCS’ Employability Skills Coaches in each of the buildings, training and dollars for customer data management software, summer collaboration for CTE teachers, externships for all teachers, training and substitute for CTE teachers, academy coaches and CTE teacher collaboration, banners, displays, and equipment needs for CTE programs.
