In a trailblazing move for Northeast Indiana, Columbia City High School and Garrett High School started a new partnership to offer a first-of-its-kind Commercial Drivers License (CDL) program for high school students.

This innovative program, named Triple L, for leading logistical learning, gives participating students the opportunity to earn a non-restricted Class A CDL license before they even graduate. This comprehensive training will provide students with the skills and credentials needed to pursue careers as professional truck drivers, bus drivers, and other CDL-required roles.

"We are thrilled to be pioneering this transformative program in our region. By equipping our students with in-demand CDL certifications, we are opening up a world of career possibilities and empowering them to achieve their full potential,” said Jennifer Reiff, CCHS Career and Technical Education (CTE) Director.

The CDL program is set to launch during the spring semester of this school year and will be available to juniors and seniors from both Columbia City High School and Garrett High School. The qualifications for the CDL are strict and students must be 18 years of age by May 5, 2025, a skilled operator, in good standing with the school for discipline and attendance, and more.

Students will receive both classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training, culminating in the ability to obtain their full Class A CDL license. In compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Entry Level Driver Training Regulations, students have module training including control systems, hazard perception, ski control/recovery, roadside inspections, environmental compliance issues and so much more. To earn their CDL, students must show proficiency in vehicle inspection processes, alley dock backing, parallel parking, coupling, night operation, and more.

"This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for our students. Not only will they gain invaluable vocational skills, but they'll also be positioned for immediate employment in high-paying, in-demand fields upon graduation,” said Corey Schoon, Garrett High School Director of Career Development.

To introduce the program to families, Garrett and Columbia City hosted a special parent information session on November 6 at 6 p.m. at Garrett High School. Interested students and parents attended to learn more about the curriculum, requirements, and benefits of the Triple L CDL program.

“I’m excited for it! This will help create a job for life, essentially. I’m excited for the opportunity. I plan to work at SDI, but getting my CDL is just one more opportunity I still had; so I’m doing it,” said Levi Chaney, Garrett High School senior.

This groundbreaking partnership between Columbia City High School and Garrett High School marks a significant milestone for the entire Northeast Indiana community. By providing this unique educational opportunity, the schools are empowering the next generation of skilled professionals and paving the way for continued growth of CTE pathways and opportunities for students.

“I think this is an incredible opportunity for our students, to be able to earn a CDL license while still in high school. This course will help further their education, build their resumes, and open new employment possibilities after graduation,” said Susan Shepherd, Columbia City High School parent.
