The CCMA students visited all four of our elementary schools to do a teddy bear clinic with all kindergartners. The kindergartners visited 10 different stations including registration where students got to name their bear and get a wristband put on their bear. Then was height and weight here their bear was measured and weighed. They moved to vital signs where we checked the bear's temperature, blood pressure, and students got to "hear" their bear's heartbeat by putting on a stethoscope and the CCMA students tapped on it to simulate a heartbeat. They then moved to surgery where we removed the "bearpendix" from their bear. The kindergartners then moved on to having their bear's ears, and eyes checked. The bears had x-rays taken and students were given an x-ray of their teddy bear. Finally, they moved to dental where they learned about brushing their teeth, and received a toothbrush, toothpaste, timer, and coloring book. Students learned about vaccinations and got to "give" their bear a shot. Lastly, they went to a bandaging station where we wrapped their bear's arm up to help stop the bleeding from the shot. This was all done to help teach kids that going to the doctor, the hospital, and the dentist doesn't need to be a scary experience. It was also to help teach the CCMA students how to communicate and teach children about different health situations in which they may work once they graduate from our CTE program. #CTE #WCCSExperience [Staff submitted post]

Our Business, Arts and Communication (BAC) and Human and Health Services (HHS) career focus groups met for their quarterly breakfast with the Career and Technical Education (CTE)! The group celebrated the 90% pass rate for the CCMA, first-year Quickbook Certified User certifications, Business Professionals of America (BPA) State and National contests and Mrs. Roberts as Indiana Teacher of the Year for American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences! They also discussed the impact of Senate Bill 1 for industry, community, non-profit and service organizations. Congratulations to our Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) students who passed their exam! 90 percent of the students passed their exam on their first attempt! Did you know the first test for any certification is earned at no cost to our students and their family? Through state reimbursements students take their first exam for free. Columbia City High School freshman toured Whitko Career Academy to learn more about Career and Technical Education opportunities through the Whitley County CTE Cooperative. Smith Green Community Schools, Whitko Community Schools and Whitley County Consolidated Schools signed a memorandum of understanding in January to create the CTE cooperative to provide more opportunities for students. Columbia City High School students can take Biomedical Sciences, Culinary Arts, Early Childhood Education or Precision Machining at Whitko Career Academy. Similarly, Whitko and Smith Green students have the opportunity to join our CTE courses at CCHS. This cooperative model allows all students more opportunities streamlines efficiencies to meet state-required graduation requirements. In programs with high demand, like welding, the programs are offered at CCHS and Whitko. Smaller programs where we can share resources and benefit students helped create partnerships. While we have accepted students from outside the district in the past, this is a true cooperative model where students can reach their goals throughout the county. Congratulations, CCHS Senior Jeffrey Copp for placing second in the Nation for Business Law and Ethics! Copp competed at the Business Professionals of America (BPA) National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Flordia. His contest was a written exam. Led by Mr. Ambrose and Mrs. James, BPA is a student-led organization for any student to participate and compete in business-centered events and help prepare them for their future. Copp plans to earn a law degree following his time at CCHS! Congratulations, Jeffrey!

Students in their second year of the Criminal Justice Pathway at CCHS were able to visit and tour the Indiana State Police post. Sgt. Walker gave them information about potential careers with the ISP and students were able to tour the lab area to see the different forensic science opportunities. #CTE #CriminalJustice #WCCSExperience
